SANDPOINT — As far as instant excitement goes, it was tough to beat what Dan Hull delivered on the very first shot of the 9th annual Patriotic Golf Scramble last Sunday at the Elks Golf Course.

The fundraising tournament started and ended with a bang, as Elks member and Vietnam era Veteran Dan Hull sank a hole-in-one on the first shot of the tourney, and more than $13,000 was raised when all was said and done for area Veterans.

“He was the first one to tee off,” said Linda Tatlock, chairman of the scramble committee, of the ace on hole No. 1. “He was full of grins the rest of the day.”

Fourteen teams took the field in anticipation of a great day of golf and camaraderie, with flags of every branch of service flying proudly.

Following the tournament with a celebratory dinner, the golfers and guests were introduced to Bryan Hult, Bonner County Veterans Services Officer, who spoke briefly of the Vietnam War and the returning Veterans. Hult presented a Vietnam War pin as well as 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Veterans pin to all Vietnam Era Veterans present.

The crowd went silent when Bryan shook each and every hand and said “Thank you for your service and welcome home.”

Once again partnering with the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, Submariners, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Vietnam Veterans of America, these funds will be used to assist Veterans in the Bonner and Boundary counties.

With donations continuing to come in, organizers will be able to distribute more $13,000 to all of these local Veterans Organizations.

“It was amazing working on this event with these organizations,” said Tatlock. “We all have the same goal in mind: it’s not about the money, it’s about how many Veterans we can help.”

Organizers have already begun working on next year’s tournament, which will celebrate the 10th year of the Patriotic Golf Scramble.
