Dec. 5, 1967 — WALKER AT SUBIC BAY

Lt. Dennis Walker, USNR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harlan P. Walker of Syringa Heights, Sandpoint, arrived at Subic Bay in the Philippines, after 35 days in the Gulf of Tonkin aboard the guided missile frigate USS Coontz. During this period, helicopters under Coontz control rescued six aviators and crewmen downed in gulf waters following air strikes over North Vietnam.

FOOTBALL AWARDS

At Monday’s annual Bulldog Bench football banquet at the Elks Club, John Phillips won the SHS scholastic award as the senior player with the highest scholastic average, while Roger Oestmann received the Jerry Kramer award as the team’s outstanding senior lineman. Steve Shoopman, voted by his teammates as the most inspirational player, was recipient of the Hunt memorial trophy.

LIONS APPEAL FOR TOYS

Donations for the Sandpoint Lions “Toys for Tots” drive should be left at the city fire station. Donors are advised that toys must be repairable. Games in good shape are just as welcome. The lions will accept new toys and games, or dolls if someone desires to give them.

Several work nights in the basement of the Elks building will be required to put all toys in shape.

NO VOLUNTEERS AFTER DEC. 14

Postmaster Moore, local recruiting officer by reason of his postmastership, has a letter from the U.S. recruiting service at Spokane stating that no person of registration age can volunteer his services to the government after Dec. 14, and no person will be sent from here to Spokane to volunteer after Dec. 10. Young men who want choice of service should act at once if they are contemplating volunteering. Otherwise they will have to wait to be called and will be assigned to such service as the government may determine.

RED CROSS TO HAVE AMUSEMENT NIGHT

Dec. 7 will be Red Cross benefit night in all theatres, vaudeville house and picture houses in the United States in accord with a demand made by the Red Cross. Here, as elsewhere, the local chapter will divide with national headquarters the returns from the amusement houses.
