HOliday season filled with illusions, music & more

SANDPOINT — The holiday momentum keeps building as we plow into yet another packed week of activity.

The Panida features a great film starting tonight, as well as a magical performance by ‘Thrillusionist’ Davis DaVinci for two big shows on Saturday. Also Saturday, check out ‘The Winter Salon’ with three talented poets at Community Hall.

Friday night will warm you up with a Contra Dance and Sunday features a special presentation for International Human Rights Day at SHS. Just a few miles east of us, Northwoods Performing Arts presents their annual holiday show starting tonight at the Circle Moon Theater and here at home, the Bonner Mall rolls into its annual Holiday Arts & Crafts Show.

But that’s not all — far from it.

Thursday, Dec. 7

‘Victoria & Abdul’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance. Starring Academy Award Winner Judi Dench as Queen Victoria.

‘Come on! It’s Christmas!’

Venue: Circle Moon Theater, located on Highway 211, 3 1/2 miles north of Highway 2, near Newport, Wash.

Time: 6:30 p.m. dinner service, curtain opens at 7:30 p.m. (Additional shows on Dec. 8 and 9)

Combining beautiful voices and uplifting music, Northwoods Performing Arts presents their annual holiday show.

Admission: $25 per person for dinner and show, or $12 for show only. Senior and children tickets are $10.

Friday, Dec. 8

Sandpoint Contra Dance

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

Celebrate the joys of the holiday season by dancing with friends! Live music will be provided by ‘InTentCity’ and all dances are called by Emily Faulkner. Previous dancing experience is not necessary. First-time dancers are encouraged to arrive on time for an introductory dance at 7 pm. Bring clean, comfortable, non-marking shoes to dance in.

Enjoy holiday shopping with more than 30 magical vendors offering unique and special gift items. Santa is on hand Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. through Dec. 24!

Ron Greene

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Ron has been a dynamic musical presence as a professional musician and solo artist, spending the last decade performing throughout the Northwest and West coast. As a soloist Greene’s intimate stage presence has gained him a reputation as a passionate singer.

Mike & Shanna

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

It’s a little bit of everything when these two come to the tasting room, including, bluegrass, jazz and blues.

The Cole Show

Venue: Arlo’s Ristorante, 330 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

Great music and fantastic Italian fare as Cole McAvoy plays in his solo persona.

Devon Wade Band

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Enjoy Top 40s and original country rock with one of Idaho’s top country rock stars, Sandpoint’s very own Devon Wade.

‘David DaVinci: Thrillusionist’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 3 and 7 p.m.

A ‘Thrillusionist’ is not a magician, not just an illusionist, but a thrill-seeking, mind-bending master of prestidigitation who creates an alternate world of fascination — gravity defying hair and leather pants (required). Spectacular illusions and a host of birds that make their way into the act.

‘The Winter Salon’

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m. for lectures; 2 p.m. readings and book signings

Lost Horse Press with Sandpoint Parks & Recreation proudly present ‘The Winter Salon: Lectures, Readings & Book Signings’ with poets David Axelrod, Melissa Kwasny and Christopher Howell.

The Winter Salon will include lectures by the three featured writers, with discussions to follow each topic. David Axelrod presents ‘A Lyric Ecology for the End of the World (and After);’ while Melissa Kwasny discusses ‘The Power of the Image’ — a theme from her recent book of essays entitled, Earth Recitals: Essays on Image and Vision; and Christopher Howell considers ‘Poetry and the Inner Life.’

After lunch at Thai Nigiri, which all participants are invited to attend, the group will head back to Sandpoint Community Hall for a reading and book signing.
