Lyle M. Campbell, 95

Lyle M. Campbell, 95, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Andy Kennaly officiating. Lyle will be laid to rest with honors at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery.

Lyle was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in Dunkirk, N.Y., to Andrew and Estella Campbell. He grew up with a love of airplanes and singing. After graduating from Dunkirk High School in 1939, Lyle continued his education studying engineering and airplane instrumentation at Cornell University and the Chicago Institute of Aircraft Instruments. He also became a watchmaker.

Upon his return from World War II, where he served in the United States Army Air Corps, Lyle married Alice Barnhart on March 21, 1946, in Buffalo, N.Y. Lyle worked in the aerospace industry for the Martin Company, McDonnell Douglas, and Northrup. He was a member of the teams that developed Titan Missiles and the Stealth Bomber. Lyle retired and moved to Sandpoint in 2002.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. He was a member of the Bonner General Health Auxiliary, where he volunteered 1,573 hours. He enjoyed photography and singing in barber shop quartets and chorales.

He is survived by his two sons Roger (Diana) Campbell of Sandpoint and Bruce (Susie) Campbell of Maricopa, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alice in 2004, and brother Calvin.

Lyle was lovingly cared for at Life Care Center for the past 18 months.
