On behalf of Panhandle Animal Shelter, we sincerely thank Deputy Kimberley Kempton for recognizing animal cruelty and issuing a misdemeanor citation this past October. This action resulted in a conviction. Though we perceive the sentencing to be lenient, we hope this case raised awareness and sends the message that the inhumane treatment of animals should never be tolerated.

If you see animal abuse or neglect, report it to your local police. Panhandle Animal Shelter is not an enforcement agency, but we can help people better understand the basic needs for animal care and humane treatment, as well as provide free food, housing recommendations and assistance.

A difference can be made only if the public speaks out for the ones who can’t speak for themselves by contacting authorities when cruelty is present. Increased enforcement will help provide the necessary awareness and understanding which will help change and improve cultural expectations.

When collective voices are heard, change happens. If you feel passionate about animal welfare, speak up.
