Four Bulldogs claim district wrestling titles

SANDPOINT — Senior Preston Bunty (152), junior Hyrum Hunsaker (160), junior Andrew Webster (170) and senior Owen Stebbins (182) each won district championships for Sandpoint on Saturday at the 4A Region 1 Wrestling Championships at Lakeland High School.
When the dust had settled, the Bulldogs finished second to reigning state runner-up Lakeland, with a total of 11 wrestlers advancing to the state tournament this weekend.
First year Bulldog head coach Jake Stark said his wrestlers performed to their seed or better, led by solid showings from Bunty (34-10) and Stebbins (33-8), who have anchored the Bulldogs with steady-Freddy mat work all season.
“I felt Bunty and Stebbins led the charge as they have all year long and are in position to place in the top three at state,” predicted Stark, who felt all four of his champs stepped up. “Also winning his third district championship was Hyrum Hunsaker, who has recently come back from an injury which sidelined him for most of the year. Andrew Webster also shined at districts, picking up his first district title and peaking at the perfect time as we head off to Nampa this weekend.”
Six other Bulldogs advanced to the final and lost, punching their ticket to state in the process, while Mason Bangeman earned the team’s lone at-large bid.
The State tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Ford Center in Nampa.
