July 9, 1967 — LAUNDERCENTER FIRE

A fire broke out at the Laundercenter at 403 Oak St. at 3:50 a.m. June 29 when the automatic system on a clothes dryer failed. The fire burned out when the gas was shut off. Some damage to the dryer and wall was reported.

BAPTISTS TO DEDICATE

The congregation of the Calvary Conservative Baptist Church, Olive and Superior, will dedicate its building and grounds to the Lord’s service at 3 p.m. today. The church was founded on March 4, 1962 and its charter was signed on July 9 of the same year. Rev. Jack Martin, the founding pastor, later became the superintendent of the Union Gospel Mission in Spokane.

MOTT TRAINS AS AVIATION TECHNICIAN

Aviation Electronics Technician First Class Stanley R. Mott, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Gerald Mott, 409 Fir Street, Sandpoint, recently graduated from a 14-week maintenance course as a trainee of Naval Air Maintenance Training Detachment 1002, Naval Air Stn., Sanford, Fla.

MEN BUILDING REPLICA

Two local pilots, Ted Farmin and Harold Riese, began building a homemade 20-foot replica of a 1910 Curtiss pusher bi-plane in the loft at Sandpoint Marina last winter. The craft has taken shape under their special skills, and sometime late this summer, or more likely next, it should be flying through the skies over Sandpoint.

July 9, 1917 — 250 AUTOS IN COUNTY

County Assessor VonCanon has issued 250 motor vehicle licenses in Bonner county to date this year, the amount collected in license fees being $4138. The whole number licensed in 1916 was 176 and total fees collected $2540.

FORESTERS CALLED TO FRANCE

Fourteen Pend d’Oreille district foresters have enlisted for oversea service in France, and there is still opportunity for more. The recruits will constitute a regiment in the regular military organization. Men enlisting will hold non-commissioned offices from corporal up, with salaries from $35 to $1200 according to rank.

The work for which this regiment is being recruited will consist of marking timber in the old forests of France for cutting; the cutting of the timber, sawing it at portable sawmills, and transporting it to the trenches for trench uses.

Enlistments are as follows: from Sandpoint, William Piatt, Arthur Pauley, Jack Murray; from Naples, William Garvin, Wilbur Shoemaker, Frank Bond, “Tod” Sloan; from Hope three Lindsley brothers, James Wesley; from Clarksfork, John Lauderdale, Eugene Ralph; from Moravia, Harry Dunn; from Cabinet, Samuel Mulvihill; from Belmont, Henry Ogston.
