Lake Pend Oreille High School students in Brenda Woodward’s water chemistry class were recently recognized at the University of Idaho Water Summit.

Students learned basic properties of water and methods of determining water quality. Local water quality experts visited the classroom to share their expertise and provide students with ideas for research projects. After selecting local water quality issues to investigate, teams of students researched background information and proposed solutions to these local concerns. Topics included storm water, erosion, invasive species, hatcheries, shoreline landscaping and pollution from coal trains. Students then developed scientific procedures to test the viability of their solutions.

Project results were presented at the Youth Water Summit at North Idaho College, where students competed against students from around the state. They were then provided feedback by judges and their peers. The projects were well received.

Earning first place awards were Teagan Dieter, Zack Deason, and Kendra Hentges. Placing second was Jake Deason. Earning third-place honors were Tori McBrayer and Jimmy Little.

Teachers Brenda Woodward and Sandy Lange said they were pleased by the students’ professional manner in which they addressed these critical environmental issues.
