SANDPOINT — The high temperatures aren’t the only thing heating up Sandpoint this summer.

The North Idaho American Legion Baseball Post 15 U19 team ran its record to a sterling 15-5 with an 11-1, 6-5 sweep of Orofino Merchants on Sunday at War Memorial Field.

Tyrone Larson earned the game one win, allowing just one hit while striking out five, while Garrett Connolly was credited with the save.

The highlight of the game came from Wes Holland, who hustled to make a highlight reel diving catch for the third and final out in the top of the sixth inning. Sandpoint would go on to 10 run Orofino in the bottom of the 6th inning after Jacob Cometto scored on a Thomas Riley triple and Riley scored on a Caleb Edlund grounder.

Wes Holland kept the momentum going and the pressure on Orofino as the starting pitcher in the game two, picking up the win in a tight 6-5 game. He allowed one hit and struck out two in 4 plus innings of one run ball, and Preston Pettit and Billy Brackett threw solid relief on the day.

Head coach Ken Oler singled out Holland as the player of the game.

“Wes Holland was outstanding for us today. He had a pair of base hits along with a double on the day, and was a ground ball producing machine on the bump,” described Oler. “And of course there was the superman leaping catch that he made in left field after sprinting 30 yards to make the play. We had a lot of fun watching Wes and his teammates perform this weekend.”

Oler also gave shout outs to Thomas Riley and Tyrone Larson. Riley went 3 for 3 in game two and had a monster triple in game one, while Larson continues to pick up big win after big win.

“Thomas is just one of those guys that coaches love to have on their team. He listens, works hard, is a leader and one of only a handful of players that can hold down multiple defensive positions on the field,” praised Oler. “I believe Tyrone is currently the best pitcher in the league right now and we are fortunate to have him with us.”

Connolly added two singles, and Edlund, Cometto, Brackett, Pettit and Austin Greene added base hits in the win.

The team’s final home game of the season is today against the Lewiston Cubs. First pitch for game one is 5 p.m. at War Memorial Field.
