SANDPOINT — Thanks to Michele Murphree, there are gardens at local elementary schools as well as at the Bonner Community Food Center and Early Head Start.

Those efforts and a drive to improve children’s health in the community lead to her selection as the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce’s volunteer of the month.

“At the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, our volunteers are essential to the success of our chamber,” Kate McAlister, chamber president and CEO, said. “Without the hard work and dedication of everyone, the chamber could not accomplish all that we do. With that in mind, we want to thank those willing to go above and beyond to help our programs and events be successful.”

In announcing her selection, chamber officials noted that Murphree coordinated the effort that led to each of the seven elementary schools in the Lake Pend Oreille School District and Forrest M. Bird Charter School starting a school garden. The vegetables and fruit are included in school lunches and snacks and also shared with the community. This project evolved from being an after school garden club to being included in the school curriculum.

With funding through the newly established Bonner County Health Coalition, Murphree organized the development of two new community gardens — one at the Bonner Community Food Bank and another at Early Head Start.

“Michele has a green thumb and a love for her community. She has made invaluable contributions to our community through her time, knowledge, and dedication in being the project lead for our community gardens and school gardens,” said Debbie Love, executive director of the Bonner Community Food Bank.

Murphree is on the board of the nonprofit Food For Our Children, which is currently raising funds so that children who rely on the free/reduced breakfast and lunch program during the school year have access to food during weekends.

She is also the benevolence team leader and volunteer outreach coordinator at Cedar Hills Church, where one of their main focuses is investing in children’s education and their future.

“For me, it is all about our children, I want to make sure that every avenue of success is open to them to succeed,” Murphree said.

Love said that spirit and dedication to others makes her a pleasure to be around.

“With Michele’s get-it-done attitude, you could see that she was an expert in putting in a community garden. I enjoy being around Michele, her enthusiasm is contagious and she always has a smile on her face — she is an awesome volunteer and I want to congratulate her on this well-deserved honor,” Love said.
