Trial is set in shooting case

SANDPOINT — A Bonner County man accused of shooting on a pursuing Bonner County sheriff’s deputy is scheduled to stand this fall.

Steven Michael Gervasi is charged with attempted second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Gervasi is being prosecuted in Washington state because the high-speed pursuit ended in Pend Oreille County.

Deputy Alex Hughes was nearly hit by the incoming gunfire, according to court documents. Gervasi, 25, fled the scene after shooting up the deputy’s sport utility vehicle in May 2016. He was later apprehended without incident.

Gervasi is being held at the Pend Oreille County Jail in lieu of $100,000. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and a trial is set for September in Pend Oreille County Superior Court.

Gervasi, meanwhile, is facing a litany of criminal charges related to a crime spree in Bonner County prior to the shooting and pursuit.

Gervasi is charged with robbery, arson and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, in addition to two counts of burglary and two counts of grand theft. Gervasi is further charged with unlawfully possessing a weapon due to a previous robbery conviction and faces a 30-year sentencing enhancement for using a handgun during the commission of the robbery and the assault.

Gervasi’s trial on those charges is planned for November, according to court documents.
