SANDPOINT — Some strong pitching performances and steady offense helped a Sandpoint U10 team claim a second place finish among seven teams recently at the Settler’s Day Wooden Bat Tournament in Deer Park, Washington.

Cadin Billstin and Jesse Turner combined to shut down Colville in the opening 12-1 win, with Jorden Tyler, Jacob Aexel, Turner, Drew Lehman and Billstin all going 3 for 3 at the plate.

Sandpoint lost 9-5 to Chewelah in the second game, with Sage Medeiros hitting an inside-the-park home run and a double in defeat.

Ty Eacret, Turner and Tyler each logged innings in a 7-5 win over Tri-County Little League to cap pool play as the No. 4 seed after tie-breakers.

The team faced No. 1 seed Trail, B.C. to open bracket play, and rode some strong pitching from Lehman and Turner to keep the score low, trailing Trail 2-1 heading into the final inning. Aexel got on and around to score the tying run, before Graysen Johnson drove Turner home for the game-winning hit.

The win proved the highlight of the tournament, as Sandpoint lost to Chewelah in the championship after running out of gas.

“The boys played hard, a great weekend of ball,” said manager Travis Tyler. “We couldn’t be prouder of these guys.”
