City Beach is a local highlight that nearly everyone enjoys, especially in the summer. Unfortunately, so do the geese. Why would wild animals be so comfortable around humans? Maybe people are feeding them? Such activity may seem humane and fun when in fact it doesn’t help these animals and according to Fish and Game experts everywhere, it’s actually detrimental to the birds.

That’s bad enough, but the “end product” from those geese has become a real problem for beachgoers. Besides the unpleasant sights and detrimental effect on the birds, E. coli from that feces can become a real issue — real fast for those brave enough to walk through it to the water. Is the water ever tested for bacterial count?

One local wag opined that perhaps we could have a special open season for hunting them and donating the meat to the food bank. But then he worried it might cause a dilemma for Bonner General Health’s Psych Department if there were too many “snowflakes” present during such a harvest. The combination of a “firearm” and its use in solving a nuisance while actually helping the hungry, would just be too much to take in one fell swoop.

Joking aside, I have noticed that one large lakefront property seems to have found an effective solution by placing very realistic looking two dimensional “dog” lookalikes on its beach. Whatever the solution might be, we have a very crappy problem on our beach.
