SAFL football and cheer camp starting Friday

| July 27, 2017 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Last Friday during the Sandpoint Affordable Football League’s first spaghetti feed fundraiser, Vice President of Compliance Travis Garrison received a phone call from USA Football with some congratulatory news, that SAFL was being awarded a second grant.

The reason for the grant was 100 percent league compliance and certification within USA Football Heads Up Program. This second grant comes shortly after the first grant was used to purchased new shoulder pads and other safety equipment for the five incoming teams this season. The second grant will be used to purchase more specialized training equipment.

This good news comes just before SAFL will host its second free summer football and cheer camp this Friday and Saturday, from 6-8 p.m. at Sandpoint Middle School, a camp open to all kids in grades 3rd-8th.

“I am so excited for the program to start. This is something that Sandpoint has never had and I think it will be a great opportunity for the girls and boys in the community. We have had tremendous amounts of support from the community — Lori Gedrose (SHS cheerleading coach), Misty Shepard, Laurie Buck (SHS dance team coach and studio one dance academy owner),” said Director of Cheer Sara Garrison. “I am in awe at the amount of lovely young ladies that have stepped forward to help out with our camp and season.”

The football portion of the camp will once again feature “Coach Red,” a former college coach at UC Davis and Cal, along with the other league’s coaches.

SAFL’s mission is to ensure that every kids that wants to play football or cheer gets the opportunity. The league continues to raise enough funds to offer scholarships and other services for those families in need in a simple and discreet manner.
