Arizona, EWU coaches to host volleyball camp

SANDPOINT — It’s not often a Pac 12 head coach puts on a clinic for local athletes in Sandpoint, but such will be the case during the upcoming Sandpoint Volleyball All-Skills Camp on June 10-12 at Sandpoint Middle and High Schools.

Dave Rubio, head volleyball coach at the University of Arizona, headlines a strong list of coaches on hand for the three day camp, open to any and all kids ages 6-18 years-old.

Campers will have the opportunity to improve their overall volleyball skills, and get collegiate level tutelage in their preferred position.

Rubio will be joined by assistant Greg Whitis, EWU head coach Mike King, NIC head coach Kelsey Stanley, EWU assistant Matt Dyck and camp director and former Arizona assistant coach Jack Dyck. Dyck’s daughter Amy played for Rubio in college and is now the head coach in Hermiston, Oregon. She’ll be on hand at the camp as well, and will coach setters with Rubio.

“We like to expose kids to various levels of coaching, they get a different perspective on things,” said Jack Dyck. “It’s good to get coached by different coaches. Hopefully something clicks and they get value out of it.”

The morning camp, for 6-12 year-olds, will run from 9-11 a.m., with the 13-18 year-olds going from noon to 3 p.m. each day. There will be campers from all over North Idaho, and also from the Spokane area.

The gym will be open approximately 20 minutes prior to the start of each session, and campers are encouraged to arrive early so they are ready when the camp begins.

Dyck, longtime friends with Rubio, said the guest coaches will get to golf at the Idaho Club and also get out on the lake, which helps draw such high caliber coaches to Sandpoint.
