Chorale, orchestra hosting spring concerts

| June 14, 2017 1:00 AM

The Pend Oreille Chorale and String Orchestra present their free spring concerts, “Music of Love and Inspiration” on Thursday and Friday, June 15-16, at 7 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church on Olive and Ontario in Sandpoint. There is no matinée this season due to scheduling conflicts so please note both performances are at 7 p.m.

Opening the concert will be one movement of a piano trio by the twentieth century Spanish composer Turina, followed by the Pend Oreille String Orchestra playing Scarlatti, Elgar, and a world premier of Mark Reiner’s “Prelude and Fugue for Strings and Piano” composed specifically for this group. Closing the first half will be a slow then a fast movement of a septet by the romantic composer Saint-Saens.

The second half of the program will feature the chorale singing the wonderfully expressive Brahms’ “Neue Liebeslieder” (New Love Songs), a collection of choir pieces and solos from the romantic period portraying the feelings and emotions of love, sung in English. Also in the chorale section will be a number by Mark Reiner, “Arise, Arise”, celebrating Easter and the light it brings. Other composers include Thomas Tallis from the 1500s, and John Rutter, contemporary English composer, and the concert will end with powerful selections from “The Peaceable Kingdom” by Vaughan Williams.

Please come and support your volunteer musicians who, for 23 years, have brought classical music to this area free of charge.
