Bulldog girls take four teams to UM hoop camp

MISSOULA, Mont. — The Sandpoint girls basketball program enjoyed a successful three days this week at the Lady Griz Team Camp at the University of Montana. Playing teams from Montana, Idaho, and Washington, Sandpoint had 32 players and six coaches comprise four teams.

“Everybody we talked to at the camp was impressed with our numbers,” assistant coach Will Love said. “All four teams were competitive, even though the two sub-varsity teams and the sixth-grade team often played against older competition.”

Despite missing some players, including two starters, the varsity team finished 3-2 with wins over Colstrip, Hardin and Bozeman. Another highlight from the camp was the close game the JV team had with Genesis Prep, which finished third in last year’s 1A Division II state tournament.

The players also saw former Sandpoint basketball standout Madi Schoening, who started every game this season for Montana as true freshman.

“From the parents to the players to the admin, we want to thank everybody who made this trip possible,” Love said. “We especially want to thank the coaches and parents of the Bombers (the sixth-grade team) for sending their team to this camp. The future is bright for Sandpoint basketball with how they have developed those young players.”

The girls basketball program will continue working for next season with open gyms on most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. through July. All girls in any grade are welcome to participate. Contact Love at william.love@lposd.org for more information.
