DAR announces history essay contest winners

| June 16, 2017 1:00 AM

Each year, Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an American history essay contest for students in fifth- through eighth-grade. Winners of the local contest were announced this week.

The contest features a different essay topic each year. This year, the topic was the National Park Service’s 100th birthday. The students were to pretend they were writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 national parks. They were to identify its location and discuss why and when it was established as a national park and express what makes this park one of the country’s national treasures.

The essays were scored on completeness of the title page, historical accuracy, adherence to the subject, organization of the material, originality, interest, spelling and punctuation, grammar and their bibliography, according to Wild Horse Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution members.

Winners of the 2016-’17 American History Essay Contest are: Emmerson Fleck, fifth grade, Pend Oreille Valley Adventist School, Haleakala National Park; Morgan Moon, sixth grade, Boundary County Middle School, Yellowstone National Park; Makien Wolcott, seventh grade, Pend Oreille Valley Adventist School, Zion National Park; and Madalyn Nichols, eighth grade, Pend Oreille Valley Adventist School, Yellowstone National Park.

Each winner was presented with a certificate from the local Wild Horse Trail Chapter along with a medal. All entrants were presented with Certificates for their hard work.
