I read with great sadness that the Sandpoint Lions Club has begun censoring participants in its annual Fourth of July parade. According to the club’s president, Judy Dabrowski, the Sandpoint Indivisible organization will not be allowed to participate in the parade because it is a “political protest group.”

Dabrowski went on to say that the Lions Club is apolitical. Ms. Dabrowski, if that is truly the case, then why are the Bonner County Democrats and the Bonner County Republicans allowed to participate every year? If I remember correctly, even the Redoubters were in last year’s parade.

This is a very slippery slope. If you allow some political organizations in the parade and not others. you are opening up your club to protests for abridging free speech. Respecting free speech should most certainly be included in a Fourth of July parade, don’t you think?
