Buckle up and hang on tight, there's fun to be had

SANDPOINT — Buckle up and hang on tight, because the calendar is packed to overflowing this week. Of course, we are heading right into Sandpoint’s epic annual Fourth of July Celebration (thank you, Sandpoint Lion’s Club!) with daylong events on the fourth.

Things get rolling tonight with the Summer Sampler Block Party at Farmin Park and the film ‘A Quiet passion’ at the Panida. And did we mention that the Panida also is showing the classic kid’s film, ‘The Goonies’ both Saturday and Sunday?

Check out Right Front Burner on Friday at the 219 and don’t miss Bright Moments Jazz, playing Friday and Saturday. DiLuna’s Café has concerts on Saturday night and again on July 5.

Thursday, June 29

Summer Sampler Block Party

Venue: Farmin Park, Third Ave. & Oak St., downtown Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

This is your chance to sample food and drink from many of Sandpoint’s finest restaurants – all in one convenient place. Live music provided by Devon Wade in this event sponsored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and Litehouse Foods.

Admission: Free and open to the public. Tickets for food and beverage are $1 each, with most items ranging in price from $3-$7 (tickets).

‘A Quiet Passion’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Cynthia Nixon delivers a triumphant performance as Emily Dickinson as she personifies the wit, intellectual independence and pathos of the poet whose genius only came to be recognized after her death.

Benny Baker

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St. in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

He rocks, he rolls and we are going to get down with his bad artist self. Benny can be seen in many of you favorite bands: Miah Kohal, Beat Diggers, Other White Meat and is a true treat to take in on his own.

Summer Kickoff Music Festival

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 11 p.m.

Stay up past your bedtime and take in the 219 Summer Kickoff Mini-Music Festival, featuring the talents of Christopher Paul Stelling, Bart Budwig and Planes on Paper.

Admission: $10 at the door for those 21 and over.

‘A Quiet Passion’

There’s a reason this band is a local favorite. Classic tunes with a deep-down, funkified twist keeps people coming back for another heapin’ helpin’ of their tasty RFB. Get yours and get funky!

Tom Catmull

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Come soak in the soulful sounds of this artist and his guitar.

Bright Moments Jazz

Venue: Idaho Pour Authority, 203 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-7 p.m.

The vibe always gets a little sweeter and definitely cooler when Bright Moments shares its impeccable take on jazz. Order up a brew, sit back and be transported by these excellent musicians. It’s a very good trip!

Scotia Road

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St. in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

This four-piece family band is made up of guitar, mandolin & upright bass mingled with the calming vocals & harmonies of the mother-daughter duo.

‘Beatlemania on Tour’ Beatles Tribute Band

Venue: The Bing Crosby Theater, 909 W. First Ave., in Spokane.

Time: 8 p.m.

A must-see for hardcore Beatles fans, this live concert will make you want to twist and shout!

‘The Goonies’

Come see this great family comedy classic. In order to save their home from foreclosure, a group of misfits set out to find a pirate’s ancient valuable treasure. The rest of the story is as memorable as it is exciting – perfect to share with yet another generation!

The Lark & The Loon

Venue: DiLuna’s Cafe, 207 Cedar St., in Sand-point.

Time: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

Their music is a fun exploration of Americana music from sea shanties, Irish dance tunes, Delta and Piedmont blues, jazz and country all woven together under the calm direction of their showmanship and love of wordplay.

Fourth of July celebration

Venue: Downtown Sandpoint and City Beach

Time: Find a good spot at around 9 a.m. and be ready to enjoy the Children’s Parade and then the Main Parade downtown. For the rest of the day, there will be stage performances and a raffle at City Beach in the afternoon, plus a fireworks show over the lake at dusk. As always, this amazing celebration is sponsored by the Sandpoint Lions Club.

West African Traditions Drum Class

Venue: Embody Studio, 823 Main St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30 p.m. (Tuesdays)

This group explores the rich tradition of West African drumming styles under the expert leadership of Ali Thomas.

Crow and the Canyon sound like a band of age-old collaborators and friends. Their heartfelt yet cerebral lyrics, delicate vocals, and choral harmonies are endlessly listenable, while also remaining inventive and interesting.
