Kiwanis awards scholarships

| May 2, 2017 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Nate Rench, scholarship chairman and vice president of the Sandpoint Kiwanis Club, recently presented scholarship checks to local Boy Scouts Sean Causey, senior Patrol Leader, and Baden Brenner, troop guide, to attend this summer's National Youth Leadership Training school.

Rench said the scholarship opportunity "falls nicely" into the mission statement of the Sandpoint Kiwanis Club, “Serving the Youth of Bonner County”.

The schooling is designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experiences they can use in situations demanding leadership of self and others. The course centers around the concept of what a leader must be, must know, and do. The key elements are taught with a focus on “How To”.

The content is delivered in an outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment.

Several requirements must be fulfilled by applicants in order to be selected. The applicants must have camping and cooking experience; at least 15 days and nights of scout camping experience, including at least a long-term experience; and they must hold, or be eligible for, election of responsible leadership position and to be a living example of the Scouts Oath and Law.

Graduates of the leadership training are then encouraged to return to their home community and apply their learned knowledge in providing service to others.

Upon returning, after graduation ceremonies from the NYLT class, the two young men will be the presentation speakers at a Kiwanis Luncheon showing and explaining their experiences.
