Novel gala tops abundant entertainment options

| May 4, 2017 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — OK, this is more like it! Lovely days in paradise mean it’s even more enjoyable to get out and explore all our community has to offer in the world of A&E.

On Saturday evening, Sandpoint Rotary presents A Novel Night Gala at the Columbia Bank atrium, with dining, dancing, auction and more to benefit “The Library” transformation.

The Panida holds court starting tonight with the much-praised film, “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” and the weekend boasts the library’s monthly used book sale, free Saturday at the museum and — also on Saturday — KRFY Community Radio and University of Idaho cyclocross course host an opening reception for the start of their online Viggo Mortensen art auction.

Live music? You’ll find it at every venue in town — check it out:

Thursday, May 4

‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’

Venue: Panida Little Theater, 304 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

This very good and previously untold story follows the courageous actions of Jan and Antonina Zabinska, Polish husband and wife zookeepers and owners of the Warsaw Zoo. They opened their zoo to Jewish refugees after the September 1939 German invasion of Poland and continued to “host” people throughout the occupation. They smuggled them out of the Warsaw ghetto, hiding them in animal cages and basement tunnels leading from the house to the zoo. Considering that the German army had commandeered the zoo for an armory, this “hiding in plain sight” strategy was extremely risky.
