Plenty of fun on tap for Mother's Day weekend

SANDPOINT — Another very busy week of fun things to do as we head into Mother’s Day weekend. On Saturday, Lost Horse Press hosts a cool book-signing event that offers something extra — pie and whiskey — at The Library. The Panida has yet another excellent film on the big screen and Friday night, it’s the Sandpoint Contra Dance at Community Hall.

Thursday, May 11

‘After the Storm’

Venue: Panida Little Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Dwelling on his past glory as a prize-winning author, Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) wastes the money he makes as a private detective on gambling and can barely pay child support. After the death of his father, his aging mother (Kirin Kiki) and beautiful ex-wife (Yoko Make) seem to be moving on with their lives. Renewing contact with his initially distrusting family, Ryota struggles to take back control of his existence and to find a lasting place in the life of his young son (Taiyo Yoshizawa) - until a stormy summer night offers them a chance to truly bond again.

Open Mic Night

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

Hosted by Doug Bond & Kevin Dorin, all local artists over 21 years of age are welcome for a fun and open night of playing at the Beer Hall. Come out for a positive environment to share your passion or just to take it all in. All levels of performers are welcome. The set will be recorded live and artists will have access to the audio. Also, this an opportunity for you to work with a professional sound person who will work to mic you up and get your levels to show the best version of you.

Sandpoint Contra Dance

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

Celebrate the joys of community by dancing with friends — those you already know and the new ones you’re about to meet! Live music will be provided by ‘Out of the Woods’ and all dances are called by Emily Faulkner. Previous dancing experience is not necessary. First-time dancers are encouraged to arrive on time for an introductory dance at 7 pm. Bring clean, comfortable, non-marking shoes to dance in.

Ron has been a dynamic musical presence as a professional musician and solo artist, spending the last decade performing throughout the Northwest and West Coast. As a soloist, Greene’s intimate stage presence has gained him a reputation as a passionate singer.

Friends of the Guitar Hour present Mak Grgic

Venue: Holy Names Music Center, 3910 W. Custer Dr., in Spokane.

If you enjoy Leon Atkinson’s weekly show, The Guitar Hour, on Spokane Public Radio-KPBX-FM, you’re in for a real treat with this ongoing classical guitar concert series. Mak Grgic has been called a ‘gifted young guitarist’ by The New York Times, and Classics Today’s Jed Distler proclaimed that ‘Mak Grgic’s abundant, yet tasteful guitar virtuosity leaves a powerful impression …’ His premiere at The National Gallery of Art elicited the following comments from Stephen Brookes on behalf of The Washington Post: ‘Weiss’s Passacaglia in D Major was a high point of the evening. offering a superb, finely detailed reading that showed Grgic is a guitarist to keep an eye on.”

Spokane Symphony: ‘Music of Led Zeppelin’

Venue: Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane.

Time: Doors at 7 p.m., concert begins at 8 p.m.

The Spokane Symphony will bridge the gulf between rock n’ roll and classical music performing Windborne’s The Music of Led Zeppelin. Special guest conductor, creator Brent Haven guest leads the orchestra. The 2-hour concert includes a full-size, amplified rock band, and singer Randy Jackson on vocals. Together, they will recreate the hits of Led Zeppelin riff for riff, capturing the blast and power of the Led Zeppelin sound.

Pie & Whiskey & Mothers

Venue: East Bonner County Library Sandpoint Branch, 1407 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Lost Horse Press presents a reading, pie eating, whiskey drinking and book signing event, featuring writers Kate Lebo and Sam Ligon. This celebration of pie, whiskey, and motherhood is brought to you by the folks who founded the event for Spokane’s ‘Get Lit! Festival.’ Join them in Sandpoint Library’s Rude Girls Room for a rip-roaring literary reading, with samplings of pie and whiskey for all. There will be books for sale and a book signing by the authors.

Samuel Ligon is the author of four books of fiction. His stories have appeared in New England Review, Prairie Schooner, The Quarterly and many other places and his essays appear regularly in The Inlander. Kate Lebo is the author of ‘Pie School’ and ‘A Commonplace Book of Pie.’ Her writing has appeared in Best American Essays, Best New Poets, New England Review, Gettysburg Review, and Gastronomica, among other places. She writes about food for the Spokesman-Review.
