SANDPOINT — Selkirk Outdoor Leadership & Education is receiving national recognition for its SnowSchool program.

Boise-based Winter Wildlands Alliance acknowledged the SOLE as a National Flagship SnowSchool Site.

There are 60 SnowSchool sites across the nation, although only two have received the flagship accolade. The SnowSchool program serves more than 32,000 youth annually.

Each winter, in 16 states along the US snow-belt, K-12 students and teachers venture out on snowshoes as part of a fun and educational science-based field trip. It’s the largest on-snow snow science and winter ecology program in the country.

Local program partners included the Lake Pend Oreille School District, Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center, Panhandle Alliance For Education and Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

SOLE was also recognized for its short film, “SnowSchool: Exploring Our Winter Wildlands,” which explains the SnowSchool experience and features interviews with school district officials and staff, in addition to footage of students learning in the field. The production was a finalist at the 12th annual Backcountry Film Festival.
