Panida celebrating b-day with music, movies & more

SANDPOINT — The big news this week is our very own Panida Theater’s 90th birthday celebration, taking place Saturday night. Live music, the first film ever shown on the big screen there and cake, too.

On Friday and Saturday, POAC presents the Unknown Locals in a fascinating original play that chronicles Henry David Thoreau’s last 48 hours at Walden — catch this event at the Heartwood Center.

On Sunday, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint presents its 8th Annual Fall Serenade faculty recital at the Heartwood Center.

Thursday, Nov. 16

‘Murder on the Orient Express

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What starts out as a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into one of the most stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever told. From the novel by best-selling author Agatha Christie, ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone’s a suspect. One man must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again. Kenneth Branagh directs and leads an all-star cast including Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley and Josh Gad.

Hazen Audel ‘My Life with Tribes’

Venue: Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

National Geographic TV host and survival expert Hazen Audel, best known as the TV host for “Primal Survivor” and “Survive the Tribe” on National Geographic, will share his personal recollections. Enjoy spell-binding stories of the natural world, from this Spokane native who has experienced life with the most remote and fascinating cultures across the natural planet — all illustrated with his own film footage and photography.

‘Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau’

Venue: The Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

Pend Oreille Arts Council partnering with Unknown Locals Productions presents ‘Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau.’ This play written by Michael Johnathon depicts the last 48 hours of the two years, two months and two days that Henry David Thoreau spent near Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts and a visit from benefactor, mentor and fellow author Ralph Waldo Emerson. The cast is made up of local actors and directed by Madeline Elliott.

Admission: $15 adults; $5 children 18 and under, available at Eichardt’s Pub, Eve’s Leaves, Winter Ridge, at the POAC Office or online at artinsandpoint.org, as well as at the door at 6:30 p.m. each evening.

The Groove Black

Brandon Watterson & Jason are teaming up for the dynamic duo of rockin’ tunes! Two long-time locals with a music pedigree teaming up.

Ron Kieper

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Always a delightful jazz experience when this talented musician rolls into town.

Truck Mills Band

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Truck Mills is a master musician and with his four-piece band, he plays a wide variety of music ranging from blues with a jazz gospel flair to rock ‘n roll.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

The Cole Show

Venue: Arlo’s Ristorante, 330 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

Great music and fantastic Italian fare as Cole McAvoy plays in his solo persona.

Admission: Free and open to the public.

EWU Jazz presents Pedrito Martinez Group

Venue: Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Pedrito Martinez, consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music, is recognized for his brilliance as a lead singer, percussionist, bandleader and composer.

His Grammy-nominated Pedrito Martinez Group is partnering with the EWU Jazz Dialogue Festival.

Also appearing are New York Voices, known for their close-knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend.

Panida’s 90th Birthday Celebration

Time: Art reception at Panida Little Theater starts at 6 p.m., birthday celebration starts at 7 p.m.

The Panida Theater has been a downtown icon since it opened on Nov. 22, 1927. Come celebrate our local theater’s 90th birthday with live entertainment, the first movie ever shown on the theater’s big screen, a pre-celebration art show at the Little Theater — and birthday cake, too!

The Other White Meat

This classic rock and roll band from North Idaho has been around since the early 1990’s, opening for such acts as G. Thorogood, Styx, REO Speedwagon, The Doobie Bros, Ted Nugent, Rail, and Cracker. Featuring Kyle Swaffard on vocals, Bass, and Kazoo, Benny Baker on vocals and guitars, Dana Peite on drums and percussion.

The Williams Brothers

MCS Fall Serenade

Twice a year, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint’s accomplished instructors give a recital performance that rivals those showcased at the finest concert halls in the world. It’s now time for the 8th annual Fall Serenade!

The concert will feature works by great masters and proceeds will benefit MCS’ scholarship and tuition assistance programs. The evening begins with an appetizer reception that includes a no-host wine bar and silent auction for outrageous desserts donated by local restaurant and pastry chefs.

Spokane Youth Symphony: ‘Joy That Inspires’

The four orchestras of the Spokane Youth Symphony will perform a program of joy-inspiring music. Selections include ‘Vivaldi’s Double Concerto,’ featuring violinists Julia Salerno and Sarah Whitney, and the energetic ‘Fanfare,’ by Whitworth composer and faculty member, Brent Edstrom.
