U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Barry Wilson was conveyed a master’s degree in science, receiving an Air Force promotion. He has proceeded to his next assignment.

In June, Lt. Barry Wilson was conveyed the degree of master of science in technology and policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. During his two-year graduate school program, he participated as a fellow at Draper Laboratories in Cambridge, Mass., where he did research and completed his thesis titled “Improving Value of Strategic Defense Systems using Modular Open Architecture”. Wilson was also promoted to first lieutenant the week of his MIT graduation.

Lt. Barry Wilson is now attending Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training at Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas. ENJJPT is the world’s only internationally manned and managed flying training program chartered to produce combat fighter pilots for 13 NATO member forces and select USAF pilots. Wilson recently soloed his first jet aircraft, the sub-sonic T-6A “Texan II” and later will transition to Northrop Grumman’s supersonic T-38 “Talon.”

If after successful completing the 56 week ENJJPT program, Wilson will receive an additional 8-12 months of follow-on flight training in the aircraft he will fly in an active mission ready squadron. His selection of that airframe will be determined by his competitive class standing at ENJJPT and will include the F-35, F-22, F-16, F-15E and C, the A-10 and other heavy multi-engine and “specialty” aircraft in the inventory and that meets the needs of the Air Force.

1st Lt. Barry Wilson graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with honors in 2015 and received a degree in systems engineering and a minor in Russian language and also earned his senior instructor pilots wings (gliders) and military airborne “jump” wings. Wilson graduated from Sandpoint High School in 2011 where he was Associated Student Body vice president, a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program and was a varsity lettered and state swim team member, coached by Mike Brosnahan. He attended Sandpoint Middle and Sagle Elementary schools. Wilson is an Eagle Scout from Troop 308 of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church then under the adult mentorship of Scoutmaster Fred Omodt. Wilson holds an FAA private pilot certificate with high performance, tail wheel and aerobatic indorsements.

He is the son of Charles and Marci Wilson of Sagle, Idaho.
