Sandpoint High students earn academic honors

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has announced students of the month for September for Sandpoint High School.

To be selected as an Elk’s student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.

The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.

Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships.

Selected for the month are McCalee Renee Cain and Dutton Clay Rogers.

The son of David and Marla Rogers, Dutton Clay Rogers is ranked 16th out of 231 students rank (weighted) and 27th un- weighted. His GPA is 4.289 weighted and 3.956 un- weighted.

Rogers has Run Cross Country All through high school, has been a captain during my junior year and now into my senior year. He have also lettered in cross country for the last three years. Additionally, he runs track and field, and was a captain in that sport last year, and will be a captain again this upcoming season. In addition, he has been a member of Student Council for the past three years, first as the sophomore representative, then as the student body vice-president during his junior year, and this senior year as the student body president.

Rogers has also been an active member of Boy Scouts, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during his freshman year. He has been a part of many clubs at Sandpoint High School, including Math Club, National Honors Society, and French Club, where he was vice-president his sophomore year.

The daughter of Natalie and Mike Cain of Hope, McCalee has a 4.33 GPA and is ranked ninth in her class.

Cain has been on the Cedar Post staff for three years, and is editor-in-chief this year. In addition, she has interned and worked as a writer at the Sandpoint Reader and Keokee Publishing, and her written work has appeared in the Daily Bee and Sandpoint Magazine as well.

Last year, she founded the Gender Equality Mission Club, and led discussion all year on feminism and modern gender relations. Cain spearheaded a community feminine product drive, and ultimately donated 111 pounds to the Bonner Community Food Bank. She is vice president of Women’s Performing Choir, and have been in choir all four years of high school. I’ve traveled to Los Angeles and Seattle to compete nationally in choir and Cedar Post (respectively). In former years, she played varsity volleyball.

Cain also has been a member of French Club for three years, and am Human Rights Club secretary and member of two years.
