Soup supper announced

The region’s residents are invited to the 2017 annual Empty Bowls, “Raising a Secure Neighborhood One Bowl at a Time” event held by St. John’s Cathedral, 127 E. Twelfth Ave., in Spokane on Nov. 4. The event begins at 6 p.m.

The community is invited to join Dr. Kent Hoffman for the church’s annual soup supper. Hoffman, has recently co-authored a new book, “Raising a Secure Child”. Dr. Hoffman and The Rev. Cn. Karen Schomburg will lead a conversation on generational poverty and helping families in West Central Spokane, whatever their circumstances. Hoffman’s insights apply to all communities, all families. This fundraiser will support West Central Episcopal Mission’s Wednesday night Dinner Table.

Seating is limited. Early ordering of tickets is encouraged to reserve a spot. Hoffman received his doctorate in 1975 from the Claremont Graduate School of Theology focusing on the interface between psychological crisis and struggles within personal relationship. After graduation he worked with psychiatric patients in prison, individuals with terminal cancer, survivors of sexual abuse, and the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles.

He is an originator of the Circle of Security Project, a research-based intervention for parents and young children now being utilized throughout the world.

Hoffman has been a clinical consultant for attachment-related interventions with the University of Maryland, University of Virginia, Tulane University, and Queensland Institute of Technology. He also teaches psychology at Gonzaga University. He travels throughout the globe teaching about the Circle of Security. He also leads seminars concerning attachment and spiritual practice.

Hoffman has been a practitioner of both Christian contemplative prayer and Buddhist mindfulness meditation for the past four decades. He has been a student of Allan Hunter, David Steindl-Rast, Robert Aitken Roshi, and Charlotte Joko Beck.

He is married and lives outside of Spokane. He has a son who lives in on the coast in the state of Washington.
