As a fireman/EMT volunteer in Bonner County over the decades it has come to my attention we have a unique opportunity as registered voters in the Northside Fire District. Two of the three commissioner positions are open for election. We are privileged to closely review the four candidates and behave wisely with our choice.

Apathy over the years, and apparently statewide, has allowed lack of interest in who is responsible in your fire district leadership with diminished voter turnout. From an association membership in the late 1960s to a tax-based fire district, as history shows us, our current fire department has evolved from fire suppression only to multifaceted services. Over years of increased expectations from the public, most fire districts have grown into various functions of rescue, extrication and the high demand of medical emergencies. The training of employed personnel and volunteers is far beyond previous years’ requirements. We should insist and expect the best for reasonable tax expenses. This is our time to place the most qualified people in office.

The commissioners oversee the district (Idaho statutes Title 31 Chapter 14, 31-1417) as to corporate powers and duties of board of fire protection commissioners. With available internet, one can further research the responsibility of the position. We need to study the four candidates to their qualifications and future direction of our district.

We often do not believe dialing 911 will apply to us until that unexpected, unwelcome moment occurs. And when it does each minute of response time seems extended into eager arrival. Best we do our homework and vote the most competent commissioners into the four-year terms.

Please vote Nov. 7.
