Sundance Fire observance today

SANDPOINT — The public is invited to attend an observance in Pack River on Saturday, Sept. 2, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sundance Fire.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a U.S. Forest Service bridge 13 miles from Highway 95 on the Upper Pack River Road. Sponsors include the Sandpoint Ranger District — U.S. Forest Service, the Idaho Department of Lands, the Society of American Foresters and local museums in Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry and Priest Lake.

The Sundance Fire burned nearly 56,000 acres in August and September of 1967.

The commemorative event on Sept. 2, will include presentations on the weather conditions and fire behavior leading to the blow-up. Fire rehabilitation and reforestation efforts will be viewed during a short walking tour.

Participants must provide their own transportation to the event site on the Upper Pack River Road. They should bring food, beverages and lawn chairs. A short walk on roads will cover about one-half mile.
