Wampus Cats fall to Selkirk in triple overtime

| September 7, 2017 1:00 AM

CLARK FORK — There was some good news and bad news when the Wampus Cats traveled to face Selkirk last weekend in a nonleague football clash in Ione, Washington.

Bad news first: Senior quarterback Wade Stevens suffered a broken arm in a motorcycle crash and will most likely miss the rest of the season, leaving the Cats to manage without their four-year starter.

The good news is that even with that huge absence, the Wampus Cats (1-1) went toe-to-toe with Selkirk (1-0), before falling 36-34 in triple overtime after missing a two-point conversion in a wild eight man football affair.

“It’s the first triple overtime game I’ve ever been a part of,” said Cats head coach Brian Arthun, who was forced to start freshman Cameron Garcia at quarterback. “He did a pretty good job, scoring three touchdowns and managing the game.”

Theo Icardo stepped up and rushed for 120 yards, and had a handful of big hits defensively, Tobin Pincher blocked two punts, Chase Sutton had some strong returns and Josh Constantin returned one of the blocks 27 yards for a score to keep the Cats in the game.

“The special teams played really well,” said Arthun. “We came up short at the end, missing the two point conversion to go into a fourth overtime.”

Garcia finished with rushing touchdowns of 28, 5 and 3 yards, and Bryant Moore also scored, as the Cats erased a 16-6 halftime deficit by scoring twice in the third quarter to take the lead.

“We fought back in the third quarter,” said Arthun. “I’m proud of the boys and how hard they played in the absence of our unquestionable leader.”

The Wampus Cats travel to Plummer to face Lakeside on Friday night.
