Timberwolves score late to topple Bulldogs

| September 26, 2017 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint junior Riley Walkington scored the equalizer late in the second half, but Lake City had an answer in the 78thth minute, leading the Timberwolves to a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs in noneleague girls soccer on Monday afternoon at Lake City High School.

The reigning 5A champion Timberwolves struck first in the 49th minute, in a game much lower scoring than the previous 4-4 draw earlier in the year.

Riley Walkington continued her goal scoring spree after a nice pass from Hadley Marshall to tie the game in the 73rd minute, but Lake City earned the win when Kali McKellips found the back of the net five minutes later for the game winner.

Sandpoint (6-2-1) head coach Conor Baranski said he was proud of his charges in defeat, while praising Lake City (3-1-3) and head coach Matt Ruchti.

“They’re very organized, Matt’s a great coach and it’s always a fun game,” said Baranski. “There were moments in the game where it was the best we’ve played all year.”

Even trailing 2-1, the Bulldogs nearly converted a late goal in the final minutes, no easy task against one of the better teams in the state.

“I was impressed with our ability to fight back. We almost scored in the last minute,” praised Baranski. “There was a lot of effort, heart and determination. Even though we lost, it was mostly positive.”

Sandpoint is at Lakeland in a 4A IEL match on Thursday.
