Simon Arthur Feist, 65

Simon Arthur Feist, 65, passed away on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at the Lakeview Funeral Home with a potluck reception to follow.

Simon was born on May 8, 1952, to Laverne and Simon Feist in Davenport, N.D. He spent his childhood in North Dakota and graduated from West Fargo High School in 1970. After high school he hitchhiked with his dog Blue and a saddle to the forests of Idaho to log with his older brother, Raymond.

Simon and his 2,200-pound Belgian horse, Chief, logged as a team for years in North Idaho. On occasion after work, Simon and Chief could be spotted taking a swim on a hot day in the lake together. After numerous years of being a sawyer, Simon decided to go back to school, and became a certified log scaler. He worked for various logging companies and for the Idaho Department of Lands where he worked until his retirement.

He married his wife, Karen, in 1983 after dating for eight years. In 1984 their first son, Christopher was born followed by a brother Luke in 1985. After his retirement in 2014, he spent time in places dear to his heart, the forests and mountains of North Idaho. He enjoyed raising and riding quarterhorses and was a member of the AQHA for over 30 years. A highlight of his retirement was his weeklong trip to Yellowstone, where he roamed the backcountry with his favorite horse, Lady.

Simon is survived by his wife, Karen; sons Chris (Abby) Feist and son Axel of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Luke (Megan) Feist and daughter Charlotte of Oxnard, Calif.; a sister, Kathy Plantz of Fargo, N.D.; nephews, Peter (Linda) Feist of Sandpoint, Dan (Carol) Feist of Sandpoint, and Matt (Tricia) Feist of Spokane, Wash.; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Raymond Feist and sister Linda Heyerman.
