MOSCOW — A dominating second quarter and strong interior defense were big keys as Sandpoint earned a tough 39-35 slugfest win over Moscow on Saturday in 4A Inland Empire League hoops in the Bear Den.

Grace Kirscher scored 18 and Dawson Driggs 11 f, or the Bulldogs (8-6, 1-0 4A IEL), who outscored the Bears 15-4 in the second quarter while allowing just 12 points in a stingy first half.

“Our inside defense with Calli Laybourne and Natalie Petit was big, it helped us corral Gracie Meyer,” said Bulldogs head coach Duane Ward, whose team had to play with Kirscher in foul trouble for much of the second half. “Our kids made a little run and got us back in there. It was a great team effort. They hung in there, and we’re real happy with that.”

Ward praised the rebounding of Driggs, Katherine Kaul and Ciera Bailey, limiting the Bears’ second chance opportunities. Gracie Meyer led the Bears (6-7, 1-1 4A IEL) with a game-high 18 points in the loss.
