All the town's a stage with entertainment a-plenty
SANDPOINT — All the world’s — or at least our town’s — a stage this week, as the A&E calendar fills up with theatrical fare.
On Friday night, POAC presents Living Voices in a storytelling performance at The Heartwood Center chronicling life if the Yukon gold country in the late-1890s. On Friday and Saturday at the Panida (and again on Feb. 2 and 3), Ben Olson’s weirdly wonderful original play, ‘Death of a Small Town in the West’ brings the Unknown Locals acting troupe to the stage.
Saturday night features the funkily amazing band Right Front Burner at the 219, and a very cool traditional Scottish Celebration in honor of poet Robert Burns at The Heartwood — complete with piping, Highland dancing and, yes — haggis!
Earlier in the day on Saturday, it’s the Fat Bike Festival at Round Lake State Park. But don’t take my word for it — what do I know, after all? — see the facts for yourself below:
Thursday, Jan. 25
Registration for Art Classes
Venue: Hope Memorial Community Center, 415 Wellington Place, in East Hope.
Time: 1:30-3:30 p.m., every Tuesday in February.
This art class will be a survey course with many options explored such as Zen tangle, portraiture, review of art basics, and media expansion to compressed chalk on charcoal paper. Suggestions are welcomed. All supplies are provided. However, if you have pens from previous art classes with Gene, please bring them.

‘Klondike: The Last Adventure’
Venue: Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St., in Sandpoint.
Time: Doors at 6:30 p.m., performance starts at 7 p.m.
This live storytelling performance is based on real events and tells the tale of Eliza, a young woman who braves the perilous journey to the Yukon in search of gold and opportunity. Abandoned by her husband, her resilience and motivations are repeatedly tested in ‘the last great adventure’ of 1897. This program was created in partnership with the National Parks Service and includes historical photos and video presentation. Presented by the Pend Oreille Arts Council and sponsored by the Idaho Humanities Council and Taylor & Sons Chevrolet.
Admission: $15 adults, $5 for those 18 and under, available at the door.
‘Death of a Small Town in the West’

Returning to the stage after eight years, this original play by Ben Olson tells how Sandpoint is destroyed and rebuilt by greedy developers intent on making it into a theme park for the rich, leading local group of troublemakers takes things into their own hands. Directed by Madeline Elliott and produced by the Unknown Locals, ‘Death’ will make you laugh, cry, think, scream and shout all at the same time. Curtain call is 7:30 p.m. all nights, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance at Panida.org, Eve’s Leaves on First Avenue, or Eichardt’s Pub on Cedar; tickets are $12 at the door.

Dodgy Mountain Men
Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Dodgy Mountain Men sling a home-brewed Montana stompgrass that goes down smooth but packs a bite, mixing the rhythms of bluegrass, the soul of the blues and the energy of rock ‘n’ roll with a plethora of other musical traditions to create a unique electro-acoustic experience.

One Street Over
Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Donna Donna & Cattywomp

Donna Donna, a high-energy duo will rock your world. Classic blues rock with some extra special fun times. Not your mom’s rock, unless of course, she’s into that sort of thing. Cattywomp, formed from a long time collaborative project, is bringing live rock and roll to venues around the Northwest. Cattywomp incorporates different genres and styles within each of their compositions.

Robert Burns Night: A Traditional Scottish Celebration
Venue: The Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St., in Sandpoint.

Enjoy a traditional celebration in honor of the birthday of famed Scottish poet Robert Burns. There will be piping and Highland dancing, a poetry reading, and the menu includes haggis, neeps and tatties. Highlights of the evening include a ceremonial salute to the Haggis, a toast to the Lassies and Laddies and a Ceilidh! Wear your Scottish regalia to show your pride.

Fat Bike Festival
Venue: Round Lake State Park, 1880 Dufort Rd., in Sagle.
Time: Free demos from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Group rides at 1 p.m. with bonfire and refreshments to follow
The Fatty Flurry Festival is a celebration of fat bikes in North Idaho. Bike rentals available for the group rides, reservations required.

Social Dance
Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Come celebrate the fun tradition of social dancing in Sandpoint with this casual get-together. This fun event starts with a one-hour Night Club Two-Step lesson taught by a local professional instructor from 7- 8 pm, followed by general dancing, refreshments, door prizes, mixers, and a drawing for one month of free dance lessons. Singles, couples and all levels of dancers are welcome.
