| August 28, 2019 1:00 AM

Adding compost is a great way to improve your soil. Find out why and how at the upcoming “composting” class offered on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The class, which will be held at the WSU/Pend Oreille County Extension Office, 227 S. Garden Avenue in Newport, will be held from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The class will be taught by Master Gardener/ Master Composter, Jim McGinty.

Topics covered will be composting history, science, materials, equipment, techniques, myth-busting, tips and uses of compost. McGinty, known regionally for his gardening knowledge and his witty humor, has also taught classes for the Community Colleges of Spokane and writes a monthly gardening column. McGinty resides on a small farm in the Elk area with his wife and “far too many weeds.” The cost for the class is $5 for community members and $3 for Master Gardeners. All funds raised from the class will be used by the local Master Gardener Foundation to provide gardening education programs to the community.

Please pre-register by calling the WSU/Pend Oreille County Extension Office at 1 509 447-2401 to provide contact information should the class schedule change and ensure adequate materials for all participants will be available.
