The 2019 middle school district 1 wrestling tournament was held this past Saturday at Sandpoint Middle School.

The Sandpoint Bullpups had 23 wrestlers compete in the tournament and 11 of them medaled (1st-4th place). As a team, Sandpoint took third out of the seven schools that take part in the event, finishing 38 points behind first place River City.

Eighth grader Shane Sherrill (123 pounds), seventh grader Bryson Tucker (137 pounds), eighth grader Khyrin Riddle (151 pounds) and seventh grader Glenn Paddack (160 pounds) all claimed first in their respective weight classes to lead the Bullpups.

“The Sandpoint Bullpup wrestling team represented their coaches, school, families and community very well,” SMS wrestling coach Adam Noble wrote in an email.

Considering the amount of wrestlers Sandpoint had compete compared to the top two schools, River City (40) and Lakes (29), the Bullpups had a very strong showing.

Sandpoint earned 30 pins in the tournament, one shy of tying River City and Lakes for the most at the event.

Eighth grader Andrew Duke took second at 74 pounds while seventh graders Ashlei Hawkins (104) and Jordan Tyler (110), and eighth grader Grace Balach (160) all secured third place finishes.

Seventh graders Gavin Clifton (80), Lucas Johansen (123) and Wylie Wimmer (130) also all took home fourth place results.

This was the final event of the middle school wrestling season.
