Ting Internet hosts MAGIC event in Sandpoint

A Sandpoint team came in 12th in the annual MAGIC event, a game where capture-the-flag meets hacking to promote teamwork and ingenuity.
Ting hosted MAGIC on Nov. 9 for the second time, an event that reaches 300 students across three countries. The event fuses elements of hacking and capture-the-flag for high school and college students looking to challenge themselves and learn some neat tricks along the way. Working in teams, students use kali Linux style tools to accomplish a series of 30 exercises to find hidden “flags” and earn points. The goal of the event is to promote awareness and potential interest in careers in cybersecurity.
Sandpoint’s team, Ctrl+Alt_Elite, was comprised of Sandpoint high school students Dylan Bryan, Joel Hill, Chloe Martin, and Andrew Wittmann. Ctrl+Atl_Elite came in at 12th place among 92 teams from various colleges and high schools.
Ting city manager, Kari Saccomanno, and fiber deployment manager, Sean Morgan, helped make the event possible. Saccomanno and Morgan, along with Ting team members Mike Cochran and Ash Updike were on the ground throughout the event to coach and encourage students.
“MAGIC and the sponsorship from Ting has opened up so many possibilities for me,” said Chloe Martin, a previous MAGIC event participant. “At the start of my sophomore year, I never imagined that technology would be a potential job opportunity for me. I reached out and tried something new and I fell in love with it. The event was fun and I definitely look forward to many years to come.”
Ting staff would like to congratulate all the winners and are already looking forward to next year’s event, officials said in a press release.
