MSIP returns with 'Cymbeline'

| December 18, 2019 12:00 AM

Shakespeare in Sandpoint returns to Sandpoint for the sixth year this summer when Montana Shakespeare in the Parks performs “Cymbeline” on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Hosted by Lost Horse Press — an independent nonprofit press that publishes contemporary poetry and makes available fine literature of all genres through cultural, educational, and publishing programs and activities — which carries out its mission to inspire and educate people through literary programs such as Montana Shakespeare in the Parks’ free plays each summer. For information about Shakespeare in Sandpoint, contact local host Lost Horse Press at 208-255-4410 or email losthorsepress@mindspring.com.

The performance of “Cymbeline” is free and open to the public. The gates will open at 3 p.m., with the play starting at 6 p.m. People are encouraged to arrive early with lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics to spend time with friends and neighbors, and to enjoy this year’s pre-play performances, particularly our latest collaboration, Sandpoint’s celebration of arts and culture, featuring classical music by students of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint and art activities for children sponsored by POAC.

“Cymbelin”, also known as “The Tragedie of Cymbeline or Cymbeline, King of Britain,” is set in ancient Britain and based on legends concerning the early Celtic British King Cunobeline. Although the play is listed as a tragedy in the First Folio, modern critics often classify “Cymbeline” as a romance or even a comedy. Like “Othello” and “The Winter’s Tale”, it deals with the themes of innocence and jealousy.
