honors announced
Recent PRLHS graduates and four-year Spartan athletes Brian Fulp and Megan Brumley were named the 2009 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year. The pair received the award at the May 27 scholarship night at the school.

Proposal will set new direction
The Priest Lake Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest was recently selected by the Regional Forester of the Northern Region to conduct an experimental land stewardship contract, the Forest Service has announced. Kent Dunstan, Priest Lake District Ranger, said this new and experimental direction in federal land management with community involvement is made possible by language in a 1998 Congressional Appropriations Act.

Harriet Street bids to open
Despite a rejection by property owners of a request to “donate” $1,000 each for the reconstruction of Harriet Street, the work will be done this summer. According to Street Commissioner Marty Perry, contract bids will be opened Monday for the estimated $28,000 project.

Bank gets permit
Priest River City council approved a temporary one-year permit for the First National Bank of North Idaho to move a trailer onto the Timberline Shopping Center parking lot, to serve as the Priest River Branch Office until a permanent structure is erected next to the Coast-to-Coast store.

Female crew plants trees
Lloyd Swanger, ranger on the Falls District, has employed the Kaniksu’s first female tree planting crew with very successful results. The six women of the crew are Irma Blayne, Nellie Brown, Jo Dietzel, Wanda Gumaer, Molly Hansen, and Margie Hull.

Official predicts pulp mill
Henry Kerr, general manager of the Northwest Division of Diamond Gardner Corporation, told Chamber of Commerce members Monday night he was confident that at some future time a pulp mill would be built east of Priest River. He told his audience that an engineering study is presently being run on how to alleviate log storage at the Albeni plant west of town. Storage is costly,” Mr. Kerr stated, “and it is possible we will move the plant to a location between Priest River and Sandpoint – at some future date.”

The Priest River Tennis Club will sponsor a smoker to be held here on the Fourth of July. Tony Jachetta and Mike Lamanna are lining up the bouts.

Gala nuptials celebrated
Miss Josephine Pagnotta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pagnotta, residing in the Settlement, became the bride of Anthony Jachetta June 1 at St. Catherine of Sienna Church. To celebrate the event, a dancing pavilion was built on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Pagnotta. Many invitations were sent out for the reception, and later in the day a general invitation was sent out to the whole countryside. The Pan orchestra was engaged, and the fatlings were killed and the festivities prolonged into the wee hours.

Barber reverts to woods work
Paul LaMotte, who quit the woodsman game several years ago to take up barbering with P. H. Redmond, and Frank Brozik, who has grown up with the Dalkena Lumber Company, have taken a cedar contract at Granite Creek, above Coolin, on Priest Lake, and started work this week. Dominick Parent, Bert Fry, Mike Murphy, and L. H. Bradbury, are in with them. They expect to put in about 3 months.
