Church hosting program on Alaska, Rock Creek mines

| June 14, 2019 1:00 AM

This Sunday, June 17, Sandpoint United Methodist’s “celebration of our fathers” will begin at the church’s 9:30 a.m. worship service followed by a salad potluck luncheon. Friends and neighbors are invited to join the congregation at the church, 711 Main St., Sandpoint (at the four-way stop at Cedar and Boyer and across from all of the weekly yard sale signs).

At about 11:15 a.m. following worship and lunch, those gathered will view a 14-minute movie featuring the Green’s Creek Mine in the Borough of Juneau, Alaska. The mine started production in 1989, and today operates 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. As of 2017, Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company employed approximately 430 people. Hecla is the company that proposes to build the Rock Creek Mine on the Clark Fork River above Lake Pend Oreille.

“The film gives a glimpse of what may transpire,” said Dave Horner, local chair of the Social Action committee and retired United Methodist pastor.

Horner continued, “We are fortunate to have a recent board member of the Rock Creek Alliance with us to bring us up to date on current developments.” All comments and questions are welcome. A lively discussion is anticipated.
