FSPW welcomes summer with solstice party, picnic

| June 21, 2019 1:00 AM

The Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness relies on volunteers in its mission to save the wild Scotchmans.

This month, the Scotchmans team is returning the favor by celebrating their hard work.

First up on Friday, June 21, at the 219 Lounge is the Scotchmans Summer Solstice Party. It’s the longest day of the year, so why not enjoy it in style with a light craft beer? From 5-9 p.m., the Friends will honor its most committed supporters by naming the Old Goat of the Year. For the first time, two volunteers will take home Old Goat status—one for summer and one for winter.

The fun doesn’t stop there. P.B.& Jam will energize the scene with live music. A raffle will raise funds necessary to support the Scotchman mission. Even better, the 219 will match up to $1,000 in funds raised. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with a summertime beer at the 219 Lounge.

The Friends have teamed up with 219 owner Mel Dick to make the night happen.

“As a business owner, Scotchmans, I think, is an area that draws people to northern Idaho,” Dick said. “As a result, there’s more business for people, there’s shops, restaurants, establishments like the 219 Lounge.”

On Sunday, June 23, volunteers are once again the stars at FSPW’s Western Montana Picnic. Held near beautiful Bull Lake, the picnic — slated to begin at 3 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time — offers burgers, beer and fun in the sun. Come on out, enjoy a bite to eat and learn what’s new in our wild backyard.

Have those wallets handy, because a raffle kicks off at the picnic that will end at the Kootenai Harvest Festival in September. The prize is a 24-hour use of the Rod and Gun Club grounds on Bull Lake. That includes access to the beach, horseshoe pits and camping space. And it all comes with views of the Scotchman Peaks.

The picnic takes place at the Bull Lake Rod and Gun Club. To get there, drive halfway between U.S. Highway 2 and Montana Highway 200 on Montana Highway 56. The turnoff is on the lake side of the highway.
