June 23, 1969 – ANGELS DOWN YANKEES

Coach Howard Faux’s Angels lived up to their billing as the favorites in the opening round of Pony League baseball play, downing the traditionally strong Sagle Yankees 19-1 in an abbreviated 5-inning contest at Memorial Field.

Tom Johnson hurled three innings for the Angels, with John Andrews pitching the final two. Each gave up just one hit. Rod Newton got the Angels’ biggest offensive blow, a triple.

Jed Turnbull pitched four innings for the Yankees, with Ed Jacobson finishing up.

LUND SAW NIXON AND CONGRESSMEN

Presidential scholar Ted Lund returned Thursday from Washington, D.C.

At awards ceremonies at the State Department, Vice President Spiro Agnew presented his citation, and later that day, Lund saw President Nixon at a White House reception.

He had lunch with Sen. Frank Church and Rep. James A. McClure and visited briefly with Sen. Len B. Jordan.

He has some pictures to show of his trip when he has the slides developed.

RARDEN TRANSFERRED

The Rev. Fred Rarden, pastor of the Sandpoint United Methodist Church the past four years, has been transferred to Snohomish, Wash. He will be succeeded by the Rev. James E. Doak, from Mabton, Wash., effective immediately.

June 23, 1919 – 94 DEGREES YESTERDAY

F.H. Lafrenz, government weather observer, reports yesterday’s temperature as 94, or within two degrees of the hottest day last year and its occurrence a month earlier. The weather is having an unfavorable effect on growing crops.

FRESH FRUIT FOR SOLDIER BOYS

The Lewiston Red Cross chapter has begun supplying the Sandpoint canteen ladies with fresh cherries for their knick-knack baskets with which they meet the transient soldier boys at the Sandpoint depots.

CITY BREVITIES

A son [Bud Edward] was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bud Timblin of Washington street last Saturday.

The Northern Navigation company will run an excursion on Sunday from Sandpoint to Bayview in connection with the ball game to be played at Bayview. The steamer Northern will leave the city dock at 9 o’clock, a half hour earlier than the usual excursion schedule.

C.B. Stuart Wednesday morning bought of L.D. Farmin & Son the frame building which he has for a long time occupied as a feed store at 306 North First avenue. It is Mr. Stuart’s intention to somewhat remodel the interior of the building and veneer it with brick. The property purchased has 35 feet frontage.
