COCOLALLA — A Canadian truck driver was cited on June 6 for allegedly passing an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper in a no-passing zone at a high rate of speed.

Trooper Jonathan Cushman was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 95 when a tractor-trailer, visually estimated to be traveling 95 mph, merged closely behind him at the northern end of the four-lane stretch at Cocolalla Flats, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The rig then proceeded to overtake Cushman’s vehicle despite the presence of a no-passing zone, a maneuver which took 2,655 feet to complete, the affidavit said.

Cushman relayed the report to Bonner County sheriff’s deputies, who cited William Christopher King for reckless driving.

King told deputies he was in a hurry and had a friend driving ahead of him who advised him the route was free of law enforcement, according to affidavit.

King, 29, of Blyth, Ontario, is scheduled to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge today in Bonner County Magistrate Court.
