SANDPOINT — Seven outstanding high school juniors will be participating in the 2019 Distinguished Young Women of Sandpoint program Saturday at Sandpoint Middle School.

The program is open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m.; the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $15.

Distinguished Young Women of Sandpoint welcomes the following participants: Kayana Carey, Mikayla Schoening, April Radford, Shelby Mohler, Emily Rainey, Taylor Riley and Sloan Strock.

The seven young women competing will be evaluated by a panel of five judges in the following categories: scholastics (25 percent), interview (25 percent), talent (20 percent), fitness (15 percent), and self-expression (15 percent).

The participant selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of Sandpoint will advance to the state level. at the Distinguished Young Women of Idaho program.

The state program this year will be held on Oct. 4-5, in Idaho Falls where the high school junior selected as Sandpoint Distinguished Young Woman for 2019 will join other representatives from across the state competing for cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent Idaho at the 62nd National Finals in Mobile, Ala., on June 27-29, 2020.

The event, which is part of a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent in young women.

Tickets purchased in advance are $8 youth/student and $12 adult; at the door, $10 youth/student and $15 adult.

Founded in 1958 in Mobile, Ala., Distinguished Young Women (originally called Junior Miss) is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. Distinguished Young Women has impacted the lives of more than 765,000 young women.

The program’s goal is to positively impact the lives of young women and inspire them to develop their full, individual potential. It encourages continued education and offers college scholarships and helps the young women to develop self-confidence to interview effectively, speak in public and perform on stage as well as encourage and showcase excellence in academic achievement.

Each Distinguished Young Women program evaluates participants in the following categories: scholastics, 20 percent of overall score; interview, 25 percent of overall score; talent, 25 percent of overall score; fitness, 15 percent of overall score; and self-expression, 15 percent of overall score.

Cash scholarships are awarded at the local level and millions in college-granted scholarships are available — a total of $820 million nationally.

Local winners will advance to the state program in Pocatello, where more than $20,000 in cash tuition scholarships are awarded.

Participants in the 2019 Sandpoint Distinguished Young Women program are:

- Kayana Carey — A student at Sandpoint High School, her goal is to be a veterinarian. Carey plans to continue her academic career at the University of Idaho.

She is a member of 4-H, Mentors, Monticola and is active in community service, and a volunteer at her church.

For her talent, she will perform a 4-H presentation based on her experiences.

- Mikayla Schoening — A student at Sandpoint High School, her goal is to a nurse.

She is active on the swim team and enjoys singing, acting and photography. In addition, she enjoys camping, being outdoors and spending time with her friends and family.

For her talent, she will be singing.

- April Radford — A student at Sandpoint High School, her goal is to be a contemporary choreographer.

She plans to continue her academic career Ryerson University.

She is a member of the Academic Decathlon team, SHS Interact Club, SHS varsity dance team, SHS French Club, and National Honor Society. She enjoys classical ballet and contemporary dance, jazz and acrobatics •

For her talent, she will perform a contemporary ballet to ”Postlude”

- Shelby Mohler — A student at Sandpoint High School, she plans to be an OB/GYN doctor or a pediatric dentist. She plans to continue her academic career at either Montana State Univer-sity or Boise State University.

She is a member of Business Professionals of America, National Honors Society, Sandpoint High School varsity soccer team, 4-H program, Sandpoint High School Student Council, and Strikers Club Soccer.

For her talent, she will hold a sewing presentation.

- Emily Rainey — A student at Sandpoint High School, she plans to be an OB/GYN nurse.

She partipates in volleyball and 4-H. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and playing the tenor. For her talent, she will give a vaccination demonstration.

- Taylor Riley — A students at Sandpoint High School, she intends to pursue a career in counseling or dental hygiene.

She plans to attend college at a school in Idaho.

She has been a participant in the 4-H market beef program and the SHS Concert Choir and volleyball team.

For her talent, she will sing, “Fields of Gold”.

- Sloan Strock — A student at Sandpoint High School, Sloan Strock plans to attend BYU-Idaho and be successful and whatever career she decides to pursue.

She enjoys dance, acting, photography, drawing and painting, and organizing. She also watching movies, playing card games, dodgeball, kayaking, and hanging out with friends.
