Sentencing set in shooting case

| March 31, 2019 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — A Bonner County man accused of opening fire on an assisted-living facility employee last summer is pleading guilty to felony assault, court records show.

James Albert Raftery III is scheduled to be sentenced on April 16 in 1st District Court. Raftery faces up to five years in prison, although it’s unclear in court documents if there is a plea agreement in the case.

Raftery, 64, is free on conditional release while the case is pending.

Raftery is accused of firing on an employee of Huckleberry Assisted Living after he directed a coworker to collect a plate from Raftery in June 2018, according to court documents. The employee managed to duck the shot and escaped injury.

Raftery pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon earlier this year, which cleared the way for a jury trial next month.

Raftery’s counsel, Public Defender Susie Jensen, is subpoenaing documents from the North Idaho Area Agency on Aging for any and all complaints Raftery has filed and any record of calls made to adult protection services, court records show.
