SPOKANE, Wash. — The Sandpoint Sharks hit the pool for the final time this summer on July 23-25.

The club swim team competed in the 2021 Inland Empire Junior Olympics at Witter Pool in Spokane. Seventeen Sharks participated and nine of them made the top 16 in their respective events — Emily Ballard, Allyson Ballard, Caleb Norling, Ryleigh Bamer, Ava Deleeuw, Lou Foust, Athena Deleeuw, Hayden Leavitt and Mia Driggs.

"The Sandpoint Sharks have gone through a lot of changes with having me as a new coach, but their hard work paid off," head coach Sara Kuhn said. "We had a lot of amazing swims at Junior Olympics with a total of 131.40 seconds dropped."

Norling was named teammate of the meet for his performance and mentoring of the younger swimmers. He and Bamer both qualified for the 2021 Western Zone Senior Championships in Clovis, California. Norling qualified in the 100 free, 200 free and 200 IM and Bamer in the 50 free and 100 free.

The top swimmers across the West compete in the event.

"It's extremely competitive with some insanely fast swimmers," Kuhn said.

The championships were held on July 27-31.
