Girls smash PRs during Sandpoint's 5K time trial

SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint cross country team is already smashing the school record books and they haven't even started the season.

On Monday morning when the air quality was good enough, the team held its 5K time trial at Travers Park.

The girls shined and senior Mackenzie Suhy-Gregoire and junior Ara Clark both moved up on the Bulldogs' top 25 all-time list.

Suhy-Gregoire was the first girl to finish the time trial in 19:31. The personal record moved her up to ninth on the all-time list for the girls. Ara wasn't far behind, posting a PR of 19:38 to earn the 13th fastest time in school history.

Plenty of other girls ran PRs, including junior Payton Betz and sophomore Grace Rookey. Both are primed to take huge leaps this fall, and got an early start during the time trial. Betz bested her previous PR by nearly a minute with a 21:07.5. Rookey was right beside her with a 21:07.6, besting her previous PR by over 30 seconds.

Sophomores Terra Bode and Devin McDaniel, who ran her 5K in California, both secured PRs. Senior Jillian Primgaard and junior Kora Converse crossed the line fifth and sixth respectively for the girls in the time trial.

Junior Slate Fragoso led the way for the boys. He ran a 16:59.9, which was about two seconds off his personal best from last year. Senior Trey Clark (17:13) came across the line next and sophomore Nathan Roche (17:55) was third.

Senior Ben Ricks (18:18), senior Caleb Roche (18:19) and junior Anders Eastley (19:19) rounded out the top six for the boys. Sophomore Jimmy Cornelius posted a PR of 19:38.
