Aug. 31, 1971 – WHISKEY JACK SOFTBALLERS
The softball team sponsored by the Whiskey Jack Condos took third in league play and second in the tournament. Team members are Ruth Beyer, Minute Wigton, Jean Piehl, Genevieve Thurlow, Lucy Kalb, Sandi Lund, Norma Rickman, Betty Gonnason, Barbara Fister, Florence Van Den Berg, Tracy Walker, Debbie Peltier, Marge Rickman, Cathy Puckett and Val Pellens.

BONNER GENERAL ROOM RATES LOW
Bonner General Hospital’s room charges are the lowest in the Inland Empire and among the lowest in the nation. Patients in private rooms are charged $41.50 per day. Those in semi-private rooms pay $38.50 per day. The daily charge for ward occupancy is $36.50. The average national cost of hospitalization presently exceeds $65 per day.

LAURA JEAN GURNEY ENGAGEMENT TOLD
Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Brooks announce the engagement of their daughter, Laura Jean Gurney, to Bruce George Lines, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bertram B. Lines, all of Sandpoint. Miss Gurney, a 1967 SHS graduate, is employed in Sandpoint in the engineering department of the U.S. Forest Service. Her fiance, a 1964 SHS graduate, earned a B.S. degree in business and marketing from the U of I in 1969. He is employed by the L.D. McFarland Company of Sandpoint and is working in Minneapolis, Minn. A winter wedding is planned.

Aug. 31, 1921 – SCHOOLS OPEN TUESDAY
School in the Sandpoint district will open Tuesday, Sept. 6, with 23 of last year’s 43 teachers returning. This is very fortunate for Sandpoint, as citizens can be assured previous year’s good work will go on.

TALACHE AUTO BUS LINE RUNS TWICE DAILY
F. Rose and M. Thorp have installed a bus line between Sandpoint and Talache’s Armstead mines. The machine is a Reo truck with seating for 11. The bus will make 2 round trips daily, leaving the Idaho Hotel at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and leaving the mines at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. The trip will be made via Sagle.

ELKS’ CELEBRATION READY FOR PUBLIC
The third annual Elks’ Home-Coming celebration is Sept. 1-3. Thursday is American Legion day. All Legion members and ex-service men are asked to be on hand when the parade forms at the Hotel Idaho at 10 a.m. The second day, the Elks will hold the limelight, with a 1:30 p.m. parade. It is expected that at least 30 floats representing local merchants will be in line. Baseball games will feature the first two afternoons. Saturday is Bonner county day. All three days and nights will find the big attractions in the joy zone open for business with a variety of amusements seldom found in a city this size. The celebration closes Saturday night with a mardi gras dance, when the winner of the sport model Nash car given by the Elks will be awarded the prize.
