The Real Santa Claus

Should we teach our kids that Santa is real, that he races around the world in one night, visiting every child on earth giving them presents or coal depending on whether they are Democrats or Republicans … I mean good or bad? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!) I personally think that we should teach them about the real Santa Claus who was humble, caring, and served out of love for Jesus Christ of whom the entire Christmas holiday was originally centered upon.

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God. His church made him a bishop and he became known throughout the land for his generosity to the needy, his love for children, and his concern for sailors. As to whether he was completely orthodox in his theology I don’t know but he certainly responded in a biblical and loving way.

My problem of letting kids believe in the Santa Claus of today is that he is elevated to a god-like status and for the most part replaces Jesus in much of our society's Christmas celebrations. I am also concerned that when our kids find out we have been lying to them all these years about Santa, that they also wonder if we are also lying to them about Jesus and the truth that He was born of a virgin and lived a perfect life on our behalf. I am concerned that they might doubt that He died and rose again to save us from our sins to give us peace, hope, forgiveness, and eternal salvation.

I loved taking my kids to see Santa, getting the photo op and free candy, but they always knew that their presents were from us and a blessing from Jesus. I taught them that our gifts to them are nothing compared to the gift of the son of God who came to save us from our sins and give us new life in Christ.

So maybe this year you might break the news to your children and reveal to them the real Santa Claus and let them learn from Saint Nick that It is more blessed to give them receive and that Jesus is the reason for the season! Luke 2:10 “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
